Fake Nails and Sunscreen

If you spend any amount of time on Social Media you have definitely seen those girls with flat tummies and cute swimsuits lathering themselves with tanning oil. Then, you will subsequently see them with deep tans and contrasting tan lines. My question is, why are we obsessed with being tan? And when did we stop worrying about skin cancer?

Why do we Like Being Tan?

As far as why we are so worried about being tan, I have a theory. I feel like it has something about the beach feeling like a luxury and being at the beach equates to being tan. Therefore, being tan = wealth. But again, that’s just a theory.

The more concerning part of this trend is that there is no sunscreen to be seen anywhere. Not on faces or bodies. Over the course of many many traumatic sunburns, I am an avid sunscreen applier. Honestly, everyone should be. Sunscreen goes on under my makeup every single day. I also apply sunscreen to the places my clothes don’t cover in the morning.

I feel like I don’t need to say it but I will, being in the sun without protection increases your chances of getting skin cancer. Wearing sunscreen decreases these chances and reapplying it every 30 minutes decreases them even further.

I’m not saying that I don’t like being tan and I definitely love being in the sun. Whatever it is in people that makes them want to have a more bronze glow, I definitely have it too. I just have a 100% fake bake. Even my face is fake tanned, and this is all without stepping foot in a tanning booth or bed. Or, even using a tanning mitt.

Self Tanner

I have tried a couple self tanners that need to be applied with a mitt and honestly, I don’t like them. They all smell like a sweaty cocoa puff to me. Applying them without staining anything is a STRUGGLE for me. I always feel like I don’t do the right thing with my hands and what about the face? I just have a lot of questions and its kind of a hassle from my perspective.

My solution? Jergens. Yep, Jergens Natural Glow. I get the one for medium to dark skin tones and it actually gives me the look of a good tan. Using something like this over the course of a week doesn’t give you any streaks or weird lines like tanning or self tanner normally would.

Now what about the face? This one is a little tricky. Jergens has a face version but I have not tried it yet. What I have is the Tanologist tanning drops. With these drops you can choose the intensity of the tan you get and you can increase it over the course or so. It gives a really effortless glow that I love.

But what about the sunscreen? I don’t know that there is really any difference between sunscreen brands but my favorite is the SunBum brand. It smells great and has yet to fail me. It’s pretty affordable and I use it for my face and body. The best part is that I don’t feel like they are oily like a lot of sunscreen is. 10/10 I would recommend.

So please, keep your skin safe this summer and wear your sunscreen. There is no shame in a fake tan since its much much more safe. Also, doesn’t the smell of sunscreen just remind you of the beach?

And What About Fake Nails?

So while we are talking about social media trends I want to talk about fake nails. I LOVE getting my nails done at a salon, they look cute and you really dont have to think about them until its time to get them filled. Here is the thing I hate about them. I cannot type with them. As a person who spends most of the working hours typing, I can’t type as fast with acrylic nails no matter what I try.

So what is my solution?

The Kiss Impress Manicure press on nails. For a long time I thought these were cheap and that they just pop off. To a point, I was right. HOWEVER, there is a trick that I learned to help them stay on for weeks.

First, you’ll want to push back your cuticles really well. Then you will want to get some Brush on Nail Glue. I use the Kiss brand, but any brand will work. You will want to let this dry until its tacky. Then when you put the nail on, you’ll want to wedge it under the cuticle. Then as the cuticle relaxes, it will relax over the press on and help to hold it on your nail.

This trick works to hold your nails on longer because there is already glue on the back of the nail and now with the glue on your natural nail, it has extra hold.

So next time you are on your way to dinner, a photo shoot, or a wedding, don’t get your nails done to only really be for a few hours. Grab these and you ll have great nails without all the work.

Let me know what you guys thought about this blog post and if you have any tanning or fake nail tips and tricks of your own.

How to Make Your Skincare More Eco Friendly

I work every day to make my life more Eco Friendly, but sometimes I just don’t know how to change some things or what eco-friendly options are out there. Skincare was one of those areas for me. Now, I have done some research and I am excited to integrate these changes into my skincare routine.

If you are like me, then you try to make as many little changes in your life to make it more planet friendly everyday. Here are some simple swaps that I am excited to try.

Bar Face Soap

Bar soap is great because it doesn’t use those plastic bottles that we just throw away. The great thing is almost every skincare brand has some kind of Cleansing Facial Bar. The one that I am excited to try next is from Drunk Elephant but other brands like Lush sell facial bars that have great reviews. Drunk Elephant is a brand that I have really wanted to try since they are kind of a cult classic so why not start with a face bar? BUT, You do not have to spend much on these bars. The Dove Beauty Bar has great reviews as well and they are a great brand.

Bar Moisturizers

The only company I really know of that makes these is Lush. So I am excited to try some from them. The one that I really want to try is the Light Touch Moisturizing Bar. I like moisturizer to be pretty lightweight because it helps me not break out as much.

Personally, my skin has been having a rough time lately so this is all I am doing right now. Just cleansing and moisturizing. I will definitely do another post with more products when I reintoroduce them to my skincare routine. If you have more steps in your routine and these are the only ones you change out that is great!

Now, lets talk tools.

Reusable Cotton Rounds

The easiest place to get these, in my opinion, is either Ulta or Amazon. Basically they are like cotton round but when they are dirty, you can just throw them in the wash! I actually have a pack of wash cloths that I bought that are the same idea, just throw them in the wash! I do have to give you a word of caution with this though, mascara and foundation will come off on clothes you wash with it. (RIP to my husbands white basketball shorts.) So give them a good rinse before you throw them in and wash them with a load of dark clothes.

Reusable Cotton Swab

I see this every once in a while and I always think it is so cool. Its basically the same shape as a cotton swab but its made of silicone. And, it comes in a little case. That way, you can use them for whatever you need, rinse them off, and put them away. Less waste and less space than a normal box of cotton swabs.

In conclusion, I just want to reemphasize that you can even just make a couple of these changes and be helping the environment. One of my favorite quotes is that “It doesnt take a few people doing it perfectly to make change. Just a lot of people trying, imperfectly.” Let me know what swaps you have made in your routine and what ones you are excited to make.

Get to Know Your Blogger – Kate Simmons

The last time I did one of these posts it was probably at least a year ago if not more. Maybe some of you seeing my posts might wonder, who is this girl and what should we trust her opinion?

Well, let me tell you.

First, The Basics

I am from the central valley in California. In 2016 I moved to Idaho to go to college and I met my husband in the spring of 2017. When we met I was working full time for my university and 7 months later we got engaged. 5 months after that, we got married. We moved to our current town for my husband’s job and shortly after getting married I started working for the same company. A year and some change later I quit that job for MANY reasons but one was to focus on my health. Now, here I am trying to figure out what to do with my life. Right now, my passion is skincare, make up, yoga, and all things media.

What do I know about skincare?

By no means am I a dermatologist but, I have struggled with severe acne and scarring for the past 4 years. In the spring of 2017 is when I started to get bad acne. I vividly remember when the first set of bumps popped up on my cheek.  I saw them forming one morning while getting ready for work one Saturday and I thought I really hope I don’t end up like one of those people with so much red acne all over my face. A judgmental thought, yes, but, I was already so insecure about so many other things, I did not know how to handle it. Over the course of the spring and summer my skin got worse and worse and worse. I was getting a ton of acne and my face hurt all the time.

Even under lots of concealer and foundation my skin still looked like this.

Around the end of 2017 and the beginning of 2018 I decided I needed to do something about it. I had quit my second job and was making better money at my first job so I saw a dermatologist. They gave me a few options for how to treat my acne and the one I chose included 3 prescriptions. 1 pill and 2 topical gels. The first week I really didn’t think this was doing anything for my skin. My face started to burn from being so dry during the second week. The skin around my eyes and mouth were peeling but the doctor told me this should only last 1-3 weeks. Every night after I washed my face and put on the topical gels I would cry for 30 minutes because the burning hurt so badly. Three weeks later, my skin was back to normal and my scarring was clearing up. I was SHOCKED to say the least. Finally, I felt like I could go outside without makeup on.

But…

I stayed on those prescriptions for about a year and my skin stayed clear during that time and for several months after. Then the acne started to come back and the scarring was starting back up. The previous prescriptions had taken a huge toll on my skin and mental health, so I didn’t just want to jump back into them.

And what do I know about mental health?

I have written several posts about my mental health and I wouldn’t even consider myself an expert at that. Everyone struggles with something different and all I can do is share my story and hope that it helps at least one person out there.

I struggle with anxiety and more specifically Emetophobia. Emetophobia is the severe fear of vomit and of vomiting. At this point, most people usually tell me that “No one likes throwing up, but its just a part of life.” I know. I am aware of it, but just like any other phobias it seems trivial to other people and unless you struggle with it, it really probably doesn’t make sense. Emetophobia consumes every part of my life and I am still learning to cope with it but through support groups and finding people like me, I feel like I am getting there.

So why do I blog?

Basically, I like writing. In highschool you would have never found me doing any extra writing outside of English Class. However, in college I was working a job that partly included writing a blog. I had a great time and I genuinely enjoyed coming up with ideas and writing out posts with my one liners I thought were HILARIOUS.

Also, blogging reaches a pretty large audience and when combined with making videos I feel like I can share and connect with people all from the comfort of my office. I myself, LOVE reading blogs and watching YouTube videos so why not become a part of the culture itself? I work in media and it is what I have my degree in so this is really where my passion is in life.

In Conclusion

So that is where I am at. I am still trying to navigate acne, scarring, and all around skincare. I want prescriptions to be the last solution for me especially since the results really didn’t last. The last Few years have been all about trying to find the perfect skincare routine. One that would fit my personal values as well as cure my acne and scarring. No problem, right? Acne is nothing to be ashamed of because it happens to everyone and some people really can’t stop it. However, I just would like to not have to worry or think about it anymore.

Affordable Skincare

When is the last time you got on Instagram and there wasn’t a celeb launching their own skincare or makeup brand? Probably sometime in 2018 to be honest.

Skincare only seems to be a more and more complex game with new products daily. For someone who has pretty bad skin, its overwhelming to say the least.  However, if there is anything that I have learned from years of acne, most of these brands are overpriced and full of ingredients that really don’t do anything.

For the most part, you can use a basic set of affordable products that contain most of the same base ingredients and get better results.

My Recent Skincare

Recently, with all the stress of work (Hello working for a bank right now!) my skin has been extra terrible. I am getting acne in places that I never used to, and the healing for my scarring is slowing to a halt.

At first, I had been trying to take extra good care of my skin and I was trying new moisturizers and masks but no luck. So I went back to basics. Back to products that I know work and letting my skin adjust to the new balance on its own.

Makeup Remover

I still have to go to the office for work and right now I am also working weekends so I pretty much wear makeup everyday. So I take off my makeup as soon as I get home. About 6 months ago I bought a pack of like 10 washcloths that are just for taking my makeup off. I use one of these and I use the Garnier Micellar Water with Rose Water. This is so gentle and Micellar water is amazing because it removes so much makeup without being oily at all.

I highly suggest Micellar water to remove makeup, it is so lightweight and super gentle on skin. I used to use coconut oil but I found that it just left my pores super clogged. At about $9 a bottle this is a super reasonable price for it.

Face Wash

Is there anyone out there that doesn’t have strong opinions about the face wash they use? Probably not, especially because I am one of those people. Right now I literally have 2 bottles of the Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser because I was afraid of not being able to get another one. That is how much I LOVE this stuff. At $18 a bottle, it seems pricey but I believe in this stuff so much I would be willing to pay twice that for how well it works. So really I am glad it is only as much as it is.

Toner

Toner is something I feel like I go back and forth with in my skincare routine. Right now, as its warming up my skin will have more oil produced so I want to make sure to use toner to really get it all out of my pores.

Right now I use the Pixi Glow Tonic. Before I talk about how much I love this product, I do want to say that I know it is pricey for how much you get so don’t worry I have another option coming up.

I feel like this product plays a key part in helping my scarring clear up. I notice a difference when I don’t use it. It has a great smell and there is a reason Pixi sells this stuff in bigger bottles, people need more!

However, if you are not into the 18$ price point I would also suggest a plain witch hazel toner. I use the Humphreys Witch Hazel which you can get at Walmart for only $10. Equally as effective as the Glow Tonic but a lot more wallet friendly.

Moisturizer

This is one piece of the skincare puzzel I have to be EXTRA careful with. I have found that serums are the way to go with this for me. Anything creamy is just not what my skin likes. I have been using the Pearlessance Vitamin C serum for a while and I just barely ran out. It really just makes my skin feel so good without the added oils of something that is more cream based.

Masks

Maska can really make or break a skincare routine. Right now the only maks I use are from The Ordinary. If you have ever been on Tic Tok you have seen people using the AHA 30% and BHA 2% Peeling Solution. It is a red mask that comes in a similar bottle to a serum. I have been using this for a few weeks and it is amazing. It seriously helps with acne and overall skin texture. And its only $7, which is incredible.

The other mask I use from them is the Salicylic Acid 2% mask. It also really helps to clear my pores and reduce the amount of acne I have. This one is only $12 and i absolutely love it. The whole brand is really reasonably priced and I really want to try more from them.

These are the only products I am putting on my skin right now. With my work schedule and our entire lives being turned upside down, why add worse skin to my list of things to worry about? Keeping it simple and clean is really my goal right now.

Let me know how your skincare routine has changed since social distancing and what your affordable skincare staples are right now.

Why I Choose Ulta

I feel like Ulta vs. Sephora is a long had debate but I am here to throw my opinion in the ring as well. Ulta is better than Sephora.

I wrote a post like this a while ago and you can read it here. I am a much bigger fan of Ulta than Sephora and I really always have been. In college, I worked in a mall so I spent a good amount of time in Sephora before and after shifts. However, I would find myself driving across the street to Ulta to get things I needed more and more often.

I feel like there are probably a lot of people saying negative things about Sephora right now and I don’t feel like I really need to add my two cents to that.

However, I feel like I can’t say enough good things about Ulta.

Product Selection

I am always really impressed with the selection not only of makeup that Ulta has but also body care, hair care, and nail products. For every type of product they carry such a wide range of price ranges as well.

I fell like I can get the full beauty experience at Ulta and it is an easy place to feel like I can go run and pick something up.

Associates

With both Ulta and Sephora you can find people who have had bad experiences with their associates. Personally, I have never had a bad experience with an Ulta associate. I could write lots of stories about Sephora associates but in the light of sharing positivity I want to share a great experience I had with an Ulta associate.

My Experience

Last January I had returned from Hawaii and I was about to start a new job at a bank. However, with it being January the foundation I had before the trip didn’t match me anymore. So, I went to Ulta and told the associate I needed a new foundation. I explained my skin concerns and the kind of coverage I was looking for as well as price point.

She had me sit  and she came back with a few options in several different price ranges. She used her little scanner to get a few different shades to match my undertones and applied them to my cheek and neck. My face was a little red in some spots  from a sunburn and she just told me no worries and we could work with that. After she narrowed it down to a couple colors she took me over by the window to see if I liked the way it looked in the sun. Then she took me away from the window to see if it looked good in artificial lighting. When we decided on one she grabbed me samples of the other colors so I could try them at home if this one didn’t work

I was literally so happy with how she helped me and I left a glowing review for her with her manager and on Google.

Price Range

I have mentioned this a couple times but I feel like it needs its own section. Ulta carries things from so many different price ranges. If I walk in looking for a particular kind of product, I can find one that matches my budget.

For example, as a blonde I have to use purple shampoo. I can go into Ulta and find things from about $10 per bottle all the way up to $30-$40. I can find something for almost any skin concern. And I can find it in a wide range of prices.

Rewards Program/ Point System

I know that a true mark of being a makeup lover is having VIB status at Sephora. However, I have saved so much more using Ultas reward system. At Ulta you can earn more points per money spent and they are also easier to use. I feel like almost every time I go in I have points I can use.

I feel like overall Ulta gives you the full beauty experience. The associates are always well trained, in my opinion. They have so many different kinds of products and at lots of price ranges. For lack of a better term, its a one stop shop for beauty.

Let me know if you guys have a preference between Ulta and Sephora and what your experience with associates has been!

Working From Home Skin Care

I am sure by this time there have been approximately 1000 articles about things to do while you are working from home or staying home for the purpose of social distancing. If you are like me then you are looking for ways to keep busy. Maybe you have resorted to puppy yoga. Maybe you have taken up piano or painting. Maybe you aren’t like me at all and you just want to use this time to relax and recharge. Perhaps, like me, you want to take this time to really hone in on your physical health. For me physical health includes how I eat, working out, and taking care of my skin.

My skin and the state of my skin have been a sore spot, quite literally, for years. There were brief times while on prescriptions that my skin looked like I could live out the insta-model fantasy. Even with everyone and their mother giving me their advice and telling me to “just wash my face more” I still struggle with acne.

Makeup

To wear makeup at home or not, that is the question right? I am not a naturally productive person, I am a naturally lay-in-bed-until-noon kind of person. Due to this, I have to trick myself into being productive. I do this by putting makeup on in the morning. Its a part of my normal going-to-work routine that makes my brain think we are going to get things done.

However, in taking care of my skin I tread a little more lightly with my makeup. I have recently become a bigger fan of tinted moisturizer and a soft glam look for the eyes. While I am at home I usually forego any concealer or shadow. Its enough to not clog my pores but enough to make the delivery person think I didn’t just roll out of bed.

What about skincare?

Since my schedule is a little more flexible at the moment, I can take my time in the morning to do a face mask, some eye masks (these are my favorite right now), or a scrub like this one.

Essentially with this, I want to be able to go back to work in the office the best version of myself.

What I have been using

This also means that I have had more time to try out some products that work for my cystic acne and even help to reduce some of the scarring and discoloration.

Pixi Glow Mud Cleanser

I will preach this cleanser to anyone who will listen. It doesn’t create suds so it doesn’t make my skin feel so dry and tight. It just leaves it really clean. One ingredient that I have noticed my skin likes is the Glycolic Acid. My skin responds really well to products that contain it and reduces my breakouts a lot. At $18 for 4.5 oz it is at on okay price point. Its definitely above a drugstore price but for how well this works for my skin, I think its worth it.

Kate Sommerville Gentle Daily Wash

Before I get into this particular cleanser, I have to point out that I found this at TJ MAXX for the several bottles I got so I found it for $14.99 each time. It is listed at $36 if you order it from her site directly so it definitely has a much higher price point. However, it works. It has lots of essential oils in it and Glycol which my skin really loves. It does create suds so it gives a bit more dry feeling but it helped to reduce some of my discoloration.

Bliss Bright Idea Vitamin C Moisturizer

This product was sent to me in an Influenster Box and my skin has responded really well to it. This product is what actually helped me realize that my skin responds really well to Vitamin C. I can easily wear makeup over this and it wears really lightweight. At $24 for 1.7 oz, I would have originally thought it was too high. However, it has lasted me a really long time because I don’t have to use much. The only thing to be weary of is that the packaging makes it look like there is more product than there actually is.

Art Naturals Dead Sea Mud Mask

If you have read my blog before, you know I love art naturals. I use their serums that you can get at Walmart and I absolutely love them. When I saw them at Ulta I knew I had to try something. I picked up this mask and I am really pleasantly surprised by it. It makes my skin feel great, doesn’t dry it out and reduces my breakouts. It has Witch Hazel in it which my skin LOVES. It is $14.99 for 1.7 oz which is a good price, I think.

There is one negative and it is a pretty big one. It smells AWFUL. When you first put it on it has a very earthy natural smell but when it has dried and you take it off the smell truly hits you. I wish there were a better way to describe it than toxic farts but that is really what it is. For me the benefits out weigh this but take that info and do what you will.

In Conclusion

I have decided to take this time to work on myself and especially my skin. These products have ingredients that my skin really likes so I will definitely continue to use them. Let me know what you guys are doing with any new found free time. And if you have tried anything I mentioned above, let me know!

Mental Health, Physical Health, And Makeup

First of all let me tell you that it feels a bit wrong to be writing a beauty blog during everything going on during COVID-19. It feels like its unimportant and just kind of pointless.

However, with all this social distancing (or for some of us, living the way we were living before) I have found myself taking in more content that keeps my mind off of everything that is going on. For the sake of my mental health, I try to only consume reliable sources that give me the information to stay informed and safe. Otherwise I find myself in a rabbit hole of anxiety that is pretty tough to climb out of.

Please keep in mind, I am just sharing my experience and my personal feelings. If you are feeling anxious and/or depressed that is totally fine and please reach out to someone to talk.

Which brings me to my first point:

How Makeup Helps My Mental Health Right Now

It seems trivial to be putting on makeup everyday and climbing out of bed to participate in the world. Trust me, I know. However, keeping up with my regular routine really helps to bring me some normalcy. Where I work, they have only sent home about half of the people (about 300) and the other half, including myself and my husband, still work in the office. I wish I could explain the reasoning here but I am not in one of those positions where I get to make those decisions.

Keeping up with putting on makeup makes me focus on one thing and have a single train of thought. Even if that train is “I own too much blue eye shadow for how awful it looks on me” or “How do those people wear fake lashes every day?”

On the weekends when there is no work to go to and for me right now also no church, this means getting the motivation to even leave my bed is rough to say the least. Seriously, if it weren’t for my puppy needing to go outside I would lay there until I was dragged out by my hair.

Having a puppy that needs to run and play and snuggle and potty definitely helps get me out of bed, BUT getting up and getting ready for the day helps me stay up. Even if the only place I am going is the living room. I think this is in part because I don’t want to lay back down and run my makeup. The other part is that I really like routines. I am definitely not saying that you need to put on jeans to chill at home (what kind of monster does that) but something that will ring a bell to your normal routine is a huge help.

Working in an office

I have also been blessed with a job that is pretty safe and stable. People need financial institutions and loans no matter what is going on. My job has yet to move me home to work, although many others have been so I am still holding out hope, so going to the office everyday is a mix of emotions. On one hand I am almost paralyzed with anxiety. What if someone here gets sick? Did I do something wrong and that is why I still work on campus? Why are there so many people out? You know, the works. However, on the other hand the social interaction is probably good for me. The anxiety is a lot to handle and pretty rough to fight off sometimes but since I am still in the office, I don’t know that there is another option.

What About Physical Health

Since my main source of activity is browsing my local Ulta and TJ MAXX this is a little tougher since they have closed their doors for the time being (which for the record, I believe was a good decision.) Once again my pupper comes in handy with this one. If anyone here has had a puppy, you know the most effective way to tire them out is to take them on a long walk. Let me tell you, for only being 4.5 lbs he can walk and walk and walk but, it gets me out of the house.

The side of makeup that I feel like helps with my physical health is that I know my skin is worse when I stop working out and when I start eating worse. And, I have been to too many doctors and have been on too many medications to let that happen again. If nothing else, I have to keep up with this for the sheer spite of it. (Who said spite wasn’t a good motivator?)

And Lastly, Makeup

Like I had mentioned before, doing my makeup and skincare routine everyday have been huge helps to keeping my anxiety at a minimum. Not to say I don’t have panic attacks and struggle to sit still for 8 hours a day at work but on the weekends I feel like I feel more normal and more like myself.

Since I am a pro at this social distancing thing, it has also given me the opportunity to try new looks with hair and makeup that I normally wouldn’t wear outside the house. Sometimes these are great and I wondered why I didn’t think of it before, then sometimes I struggle to not wipe it off before I am even done.

So basically, what I am trying to say is staying safe and staying healthy is important. But, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Pick one or two news sources that you can trust and check them once a day for any important updates. Personally, my state has a twitter account run by the governors office specifically for these updates and it is the only source I read right now.

There is no right or wrong way to care for your mental health. Right now, I am trying to get into Yoga and its been great. Some people might be taking a step back from the go-go-go nature of their lives to relax. Others might be learning hobbies (like makeup) and filling their time. I know its weird to write a beauty blog right now but hey, if it helps someone out there stay sane, its worth it.

Get Ready With Me and Talk About Makeup

Hello Everyone and welcome to another video blog post recap!

Makeup is crazy and the makeup world is even crazier, so lets just dive in.

If you want to keep up with makeup launches then you can take a look at the Twitter and Instagram pages for Trendmood. There are literally several posts a day announcing lunches from Colourpop, ABH, Urban Decay, Kylie Cosmetics, and literally every other brand you can think of, and its not slowing down. Honestly, it is ridiculous and overwhelming. (If you are not prepared for a rant you can skip down to the next paragraph but if you want to hear my thoughts stay tuned.) There is no one who could possibly purchase all this makeup and even if they could then there is probably no way that they could use it in this lifetime. I also feel like there is no way that brands are giving launches the time they deserve. I could go on forever but if you want to hear my full rant watch my video 🙂

Now onto the makeup  portion of this segment. Since I live in one of the driest parts of America my makeup routine is different than what it is in the summer. during the summer I have a firm belief that primers are useless. The more products that you put on you face the more that they can slide around. However, in the winter using a primer helps to add another layer to lock in the moisture so that my skin doesn’t suffer.

As far as the rest of my face I keep things the same for the most part. I use the same powders, concealer and setting spray. I have been trying the Morphe continuous setting mist and I have some mixed feelings about it. I feel like its a good setting spray but it doesn’t have the oil control factor that the De-Slick All Nighter Setting Spray has.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, how do you have desert dry skin but also still  struggle with oily skin? Well here is what I think is going on, since it is more dry outside my skin produces more oil to try to balance itself at. That is just my theory but whatever the reason is, its still a struggle.

If you guys also seem to struggle with oily skin and a crazy dry winter let me know. Also please check out my video and give it a like and subscribe to my channel.

Fall Makeup and Trying New Makeup

Hallelujah it is finally turning into fall. Pumpkin spice is back on the shelves and I can go full on pumpkin patch loving white girl.

Other than just loving a good PSL and cooling it at the gym, fall also means that I get to do my favorite fall makeup looks. If you are someone who happens to know me in real life, I wear a gold eye and plum lip pretty much through Thanksgiving. It is my favorite look and when I’m not dealing with a migraine is super easy to do.

Here is the YouTube video I did about this topic: https://youtu.be/sSz7bdhaQq4

If you want to hear a personal life update you can read all the way to the end but for this part were just going to focus on makeup.

For the look I created in my video I used a new foundation that I have seen over and over again and I finally decided to give it a try. It is the Juvias Place I Am Magic foundation. If I only had one word to describe this foundation it would be WOW. Just wow. It is pigmented, it is full coverage, it is matte and the range of colors is phenomenal. It is a 1 oz bottle and its $20 at Ulta.

One thing I feel like I really need to acknowledge is the price. If you are someone who is more of a drugstore price range and you want to invest in a good foundation this is a great price. If you are a luxury brand lover then you will be presently surprised by this price point. I have literally 0 negative things to say about it, this is amazing.

Another thing I tried just for this video is the James Charles X Morphe pallet. I am well aware that there has been and always will be drama surrounding James Charles. However, to a regular consumer does that effect how the pallet performs: no. I will say that this pallet definitely meets my expectations. It is pigmented and blends really beautifully. There is a really wide range of colors and they don’t really have much fallout. The color story isn’t great but I feel like the setup makes sense so that makes up for it.

Okay so now for my personal life update: honestly I am kind of struggling right now. I am currently struggling it’s daily migraines and its going on three months working on getting my kitchen redone. We have cabinets sitting in the garage that we will be putting in this weekend and then the last things we have to do are the backsplash and the countertops. At the moment my kitchen is a microwave and a toaster oven on the ground.

As far as me personally, I have always struggled with migraines but lately has been a whole new thing. My eyes feel like they want to explode and I cant really look at light. Really the worst part is that my job requires me staring at a screen all day. If you read any of my early blog posts you know that I struggle with some pretty bad anxiety. Since then I have learned some really great coping mechanisms. (If you want to hear about them let me know!) I don’t have panic attack’s three times a week like I used to but sometimes I still wake up shaking. I’ll get over it eventually but I am getting better!

Let me know what your favorite fall looks are and what your favorite part of fall is. Also don’t forget to head over to my YouTube Channel to check out my video for my look and give it a big ‘ol thumbs up and subscribe to my channel! I love to hear your feedback; the good, the bad and the ugly so tell me what you think!

How to Make Your Makeup Last All Day Long

In high school I would always sit with my hand on my cheek ready to fall asleep at any minute. The result: little to no foundation left on my face by the end of the day. What was left on my face was separated and oxidized.

I went through a lot of different phases through middle and high school with makeup to try to make my skin look better and last longer. Some mornings was just liquid foundation, sometimes I used concealer (there was a brief time I would apply it under my foundation for no apparent reason) sometimes I would use just powder foundation. Really, the goal was to have the flawless, matte skin like all the pretty girls did.

None of this worked and really until recently, and thanks to this video from Jaclyn Hill, I was still bad at this. Now, I do have to say, if you are someone who has dry skin what I am about to tell you may not work for you but if any of my fellow grease balls are reading I have your solution!

Enough of the talking and backstory lets get to what you clicked on this article for.

Step 1: The Base

Makeup only looks as good as what’s under it. This is only partly true but still something important to remember in this step. Recently I have stepped away from using traditional primers and I have moved into using a hydrating serum. The one that I currently use is the Art Naturals Hydrating Formula. High school me would have strayed away from a hydrating product because I was terrified that it would make my skin more oily. Little did I know stripping all the oils from my skin was only furthering the issue.

Now, I have found my happy medium is a hydrating serum. The important thing here is that your skin is a little tacky. Not like Elmer’s glue on a 4-year-old sticky but just enough it barely sticks to your hands if you touch it. This allows the foundation to stick to your skin and stay in place.

Step 2: The Foundation

The foundation that I use is not something that I would have ever thought I would use. I told the sales associate at Ulta that I wanted something good for oily skin. It didn’t have to be full coverage but if it was that would be great, and I wanted it to have a matte finish. The result here is that I have the best foundation for my skin type and I love wearing it everyday.

My point here is that using a foundation that is meant for your skin is really what will make the difference for you. If you have dry skin and you’re using something for oily skin its probably going to turn out looking nowhere near what you wanted.

The other point I want to make about foundation is how you apply it. If anyone were to ask me I would say a sponge is the only way to go. Brushes are streaky and much harder to blend a liquid product. I use this sponge and let me tell you it is magic.

Step 3: The Concealer

If you are one of the Blessed Ones that has perfect skin and doesn’t have acne and gets enough sleep consistently, then please feel free to skip to step 4. Okay, now that its just us normal people here I am going to tell you how to use concealer to change your life. Invest in something high coverage and liquid.

For me this means Tarte Shape Tape but maybe for you something comes to mind that you like better. There really hasn’t been a makeup product that has revolutionized and revised the bar in the industry like Shape Tape.

But you may be asking how does this change my life? Apply this under your eyes in an upside-down triangle shape, on your Cupid’s bow, the tip of your nose and all of your spots. Now, remember that sponge we send fo foundation? Bounce that concealer in until you feel like it is blended to high heaven.

Step 4: Setting and Baking

Now that you’re looking a little like you’ve been sick for approximately 6 years, you are going to set your concealer. The reason I like using Shape Tape so much is because you can usually wait 10 minutes before you set it before it starts creasing.

At this point your sponge/blender/beauty blender might be getting dry. I recommend taking some MAC Fix+ or any other facial spray and giving it a refreshing spritz. the setting powder I use for under my eyes is the Becca Under Eye Brightening Powder. I take my sponge and stamp some under my eyes but DO NOT BLEND IT. Just let it sit there. The next thing I will do is set my concealer. I use the Makeup Revolution Luxury Baking Powder. I pour some  into the cap and then do the same process over the places you applied concealer and anywhere you feel like your makeup might move during the day.

Now you are going to also not blend this in and leave this powder on your face while you do your eye look.

Step 5: Finishing the Face

Now you are going to take a small but fluffy brush (I recommend the ELF Jellypop Stiple Brush) and dust off the powder gently. Once that is off you can proceed to do your blush, bronzer, contour, and/or highlight as you normally would.

To really finish this off you are going to get a setting spray that is also good for your skin type. (I use the Urban Decay All Nighter De-Slick Setting Spray for oily skin) Make sure that this has a fine mist and that you use it over your whole face.

For me this is where the story ends. My makeup stays in place until I take it off after work or at night. If you are someone who is worried that this wont work for you carry your facial spray and blending sponge with you for a quick tough up throughout the day.
